Ortofon cartridges and vinyl playback
The cartridge sits where the record groove becomes an electrical signal. Ortofon’s work in that small but essential component gives vinyl listeners a wide range of choices, each with its own setup requirements.
A long history of pickup development
Ortofon traces its history to 1918 and introduced its first moving-coil cartridges in 1948. Its cartridge development spans moving-magnet and moving-coil designs, alongside tools and accessories for analog playback.
These categories describe different ways of generating the signal. They also help explain why cartridges cannot be selected only by appearance or price: their electrical and mechanical requirements must fit the system.
Check the entire cartridge partnership
A cartridge needs suitable mounting, tonearm compatibility and phono-stage gain and loading. Many moving-coil designs produce a lower signal than moving-magnet models, so the phono stage deserves particular attention. The exact cartridge specification is the right reference.
Setup includes alignment and the manufacturer’s tracking-force guidance, along with a stable turntable support. Our services can help relate cartridge selection to the turntable and electronics you already own. Bring complete model names rather than relying on the age or general style of the equipment.

Questions before you listen
What is the difference between moving magnet and moving coil?
They generate the signal using different arrangements of magnets and coils. Their output and phono-stage requirements can differ, so compare the exact cartridge specifications.
Will any Ortofon cartridge fit my turntable?
No. Cartridge mounting, tonearm compatibility, available adjustment and phono-stage requirements all need to be checked.
Can I replace only the stylus?
That depends on the cartridge model. Some cartridges accept a user-replaceable stylus, while others require a different service or replacement approach.
